Written in 1960 in Versoix (Switzerland), the play "Alegerea" is a parable in which Their Majesties King Michael I and Queen Ana convey the emotions of a world adrift. In the midst of the Cold War, the world had lost its compass, and "our evaporated country" (Emil Cioran) groaned under the Soviet yoke, taking orders from the Red Kremlin.
An apathetic West had abandoned – for an uncertain time – countries that once belonged to the Free World. The "Great Soviet Zone surrounded by barbed wire," as Solzhenitsyn called it, would not collapse until 1989…
This closed-off world and the violent changes following a global conflict are questioned and illustrated by the characters of "Alegerea" – The Man, Amar, Ease, The Friend, The Singer – living ideas and unyielding principles of a noble or derailed humanity.
The struggle between Good and Evil is fought with masks and the cunning of characters who emerge from Iago's cloak: Amar and Ease are two sides of the same coin, a corrupt one displaying human greed in dual effigy. One speaks in the name of… violent Leninism, the other in the name of pleasure, a hedonism that dispenses with ideology.
Faced with an essential choice – what will The Man decide? Love and charity, as revealed by Queen Ana in a memoir of the Royal House's history and of Romania itself.
The play, directed by Alexandru Boureanu and Raluca Păun, is more relevant than ever, as human conscience is once again put to the test – in a time when the same belligerent state east of Romania wages a war aiming at a new world order.
What will humanity choose?
